Fishwicks Printers, situated in Durban’s busy Sydney Road business district, is considered one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned commercial print companies providing a full 360° solution to a host of businesses in the financial, retail, FMCG, corporate and advertising sectors.
Renowned for racking up various industry ‘firsts’ in its 45-year lifetime, it’s management team is constantly focused on investing in the latest technology to achieve the next stage of growth.
During 2012, an unprecedented R30-million was spent on a host of new printing and finishing equipment to gain a strategic advantage in its quest to offer customers the very best quality and service.
An all-new Durst Rho P10 200 flatbed inkjet printer was chosen to handle the company’s burgeoning large-format digital print demands. Considered the most productive ten picolitre UV printer in its class, it was the first of its kind in South Africa at that time.
‘I have to say that the Durst Rho P10 200 flatbed inkjet printer installation was one of our easiest so far,’ comments Gary Crossland, Fishwicks Printers’ digital printing manager. ‘Our operators received comprehensive training from Kemtek and Durst technicians, which meant they knew what they were doing from the get-go. The entire system was up and running within two days and we’ve not experienced any hiccups since!’
Best in class
Launched at drupa 2012, and showcased by Kemtek at the Africa Print Expo in the same year, Fishwicks’ Rho P10 200 features Durst’s Quadro Array 10 printhead technology with a 1 000dpi resolution. Capable of printing on a range of rigid and rolled substrates including paper, board, plastic, glass and wood, with a maximum width of two metres and unlimited length, it uses six colours, plus white for transparent substrates, to offer photographic quality printing for advertising and corporate promotional material, POP material, packaging, backlit luxury goods and more.
Other highlights include mechanical front stops for accurate parallel side-by-side board printing and perfect print registration on long boards and high-speed light colour printing including process colour additions (orange and violet).
‘Overall, the Durst Rho P10 200 scores top marks in terms of quality, speed, versatility and reliability, which means minimum downtime and swift job turnaround,’ relates Gary. ‘It has transformed our large-format print production capabilities, allowing us to present the most perfectly structured and striking printed materials for some of South Africa’s most iconic brands.’
Short runs made easy
More recently, Fishwicks Printers has employed Kemtek’s expertise and assistance in acquiring an HP Indigo 5000r sheetfed digital press, remanufactured in Israel according to HP Indigo’s strict reconditioning programme, to handle extra capacity in the print-on-demand arena.
Capable of printing up to two million colour pages or five million monochrome pages/month, it has a full HP Indigo warranty and is a cost-effective option for short- to medium-volume runs including promotional leaflets and labels, business cards and speciality applications such as unique numbering for competitions, security coding and POS materials. ‘In the past couple of years we’ve realised that the demand for short-run printing is increasing and the HP Indigo 5000r provides the perfect vehicle to handle numerous materials and designs consistently and efficiently. As a result, we’re now able to respond positively to market demand by offering a broader spectrum of products that complement our existing printing disciplines,’ comments Gary. ‘We have a long-standing business relationship with the Kemtek team, who understand our business values and requirements to provide our customers with top-quality, competitively-priced printed products at all times. Comprehensive in-house operator training on the HP Indigo 5000r was completed by Wendy McLoughlin (HP Application Support & Training Specialist) and director, Steve Gordon, and his KwaZulu-Natal team continue to provide us with the most reliable sales and service support. I’m confident that this is just a stepping stone towards a much broader digital platform in the near future,’ he concludes.
