Situated on the beautiful island of Mauritius is a dynamic media group called La Sentinelle, providing world-class solutions in the media, communications, publishing and printing arenas to numerous local and international clients.
Established in 1963, it has sealed its reputation as a leader in its field through constant investment in leading-edge technologies and highly-skilled people.
Following a recent business acquisition, its printing division in Baie-du-Tombeau has undergone a face-lift, introducing an all-new prepress operation that includes a Screen PTR FX 870II flexo CtP unit and Flint Combi FII combination platemaker.
‘These investments were made after purchasing a leading printing company on the island that specialises in light packaging,’ comments Naheer Himmatkhan, prepress manager. ‘In view of our short- to mid-term plan for growth in the printing industry, we decided to invest in this high-end flexography technology to offer good quality to our customers and enhance our position in this niche market.’
The Screen PTR FX 870II flexo CtP unit has an output resolution of up to 4 800dpi and can image the black mask layer of resin plates directly, eliminating the need for film and other intermediate processing. La Sentinelle has also opted for Nylosolv II washout solvent, to create a more environmentally-friendly prepress process.
‘Besides the initial installation, we calibrated La Sentinelle’s press to reproduce high quality onto various substrates, including fine highlights with smooth transitions and very "sharp" fine text,’ comments Kevin Naidu, Kemtek national technical manager (flexo). ‘The combination of both units gives the advantage of high quality and increased productivity in platemaking.’
According to Naheer, Kemtek is more than a business partner to the La Sentinelle team. ‘With Kemtek’s technical expertise, immediate response and guidance, La Sentinelle has grown exponentially in the graphic arts business. We’ve been purchasing various systems and consumables for 15 years and have grown from a newspaper-oriented business to become the leader in commercial printing with state-of-the-art investment in both software and hardware for our prepress business unit. With our new venture into light packaging and flexography printing, we’re once again using Kemtek’s expertise to guide us,’ he remarks. ‘Without doubt, our new equipment ,with its beyond HD possibility in terms of fine screening and guaranteed high-quality prints, gives us much more leverage to handle value-added jobs. A fresh printing segment is now within our reach and we’re working very hard to become a major player locally and in other nearby regions.’
