The arrival of an all-new HP Indigo WS6600 at Didget Printing in Johannesburg has spurred a host of ground-breaking packaging projects.

In January this year, the innovative team at Didget Printing in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, took charge of an advanced HP Indigo WS6600 digital press.

Now in its eighth year, Didget Printing (in partnership with sister company, Trempak Trading) has earned a respected reputation in South Africa as the digital print specialist in bespoke prototypes for a host of printed packaging applications and the go-to company for short-run labels, shrink sleeves, pre-production samples and speciality applications such as unique numbering for competitions, security coding (anti-fraud/parallel import), and a host of POS vehicles.

‘The WS6600, which replaces our original HP Indigo 4500 press, is taking our digital business to a whole new level,’ declares MD, Graham Finke. ‘What sets us apart in the local industry is the fact that we’ve really mastered the digital process. We understand that we’re not competing in a flexographic or gravure environment, so we’re able to assess new packaging opportunities with a true digital mind-set.’

Marketing manager, Brenda Harris, agrees with Graham’s statement, adding that the overriding focus at Didget is always on ‘blue sky thinking’ and partnering with brand owners, large and small, to deliver innovative packaging that differentiates a brand and, most importantly, connects with the consumer.

‘There’s a wealth of consumer data readily available these days, which means brand owners can engineer tailor-made marketing campaigns to a specific audience, anytime, anywhere. This is where digital printing truly comes into its own,’ she states.

The full package

Building upon the worldwide success of its predecessor, the WS6000, the HP Indigo WS6600 digital press supports higher production throughput, unmatched gravure quality print, and advanced colour matching capabilities, enabling Graham and the team to offer various added value applications with lower operational costs and shorter turnaround times. As always, Kemtek’s experienced technical sales team has provided comprehensive and expert in-house training and service support to ensure the HP Indigo technology performs to its full potential.

With a maximum printing speed of 60m/min, and the capability to print on film or paper substrates up to a thickness of 450um, Didget Printing’s machine has all the bells and whistles, including an inline priming unit that optimises ink adhesion and press performance, plus HP’s SmartStream Labels and Packaging Workflow Suite. which efficiently creates profiles that match Pantone and spot colours, and specific brand colours, with very little waste.

‘From personalised packaging and labelling to boutique bags, shelf talkers and POS, we can deliver up-to-the-minute designs and ideas that really pack a punch. The opportunities are endless!’ declares Graham. ‘We’ve got a host of exciting and novel projects currently on the go with various brand owners, large and small, that really showcase the advanced capabilities of the HP Indigo WS6600, plus we’re looking to extend our current advanced digital printing and finishing service even further in the near future. Overall, our strategy always is to utilise our expert market knowledge and advanced technologies to deliver leading-edge, value added packaging and labelling designs that create differentiation and positive brand growth,’ he sums up.

Press operator, Uben Govender, and Didget Printing MD, Graham Finke, get set to put the HP indigo WS6600 through its paces.
