Atlas Printers choose Durst
Tuesday, 14th April 2015

WITH a proud 60-year history in the local commercial printing arena, multi award-winning Atlas Printers continues to lead the way with its top-class printing capabilities and renowned customer service.

To optimise new opportunities in niche printing and packaging, owners, Vinesh and Rajan Gokool, have recently taken ownership of a Durst P10 160 UV inkjet printer, Aristomat TL1625 cutting table and EngView design software, supplied and installed at its 3 000m2 Durban North premises by Kemtek’s expert technical team.

‘At the Kemtek Open House, hosted in February this year, we saw all three systems in action and were impressed by their advanced capabilities and performance,’ comments Vinesh Gokool. ‘What caught our eye with the Durst UV inkjet printer was its ability to handle a wide range of rigid and reel-to-reel materials. There’s definitely a growing demand for short run, bespoke work, which is an area that we’ve not capitalised on before, so we’re excited to offer our valued customers completely fresh and innovative personalised print options, including Point of Sale (POS), posters, supersize prints, samples and promotional packaging.’
Now firmly ensconced in a specially-converted climate-controlled production room, the 1.6m-wide Durst P10 160 offers unrivalled media flexibility in terms of material size and type and overall productivity. At the heart of the machine is Durst’s latest Quadro Array 10M printhead technology, which creates stunning ‘fine art’ print quality up to 1 000dpi resolution, fine tones and optional additional light colour reproduction.

Other benefits include exceptional ink adhesion and a compact, sturdy and industrial design and unparalleled reliability. ‘When it comes to top-quality machine design, Durst never takes any short cuts,’ remarks Kemtek sales manager, Nigel Tretheway. ‘Approximately 80% of machine parts are built in-house, in Europe, with each machine tailor-made according to individual customer specifications.’

Fine finishing
Situated adjacent to the Durst press is the Aristomat TL 1625 high-speed flatbed digital cutter. Designed for precision, reliability and efficiency, the machine has a 1 625mm x 2 500mm work area, an adapted vacuum system and specialised tool heads. A conveyor is also included. ‘The Aristomat is the ideal system for cutting anything, including vinyl, laminates, solid fibre and corrugated board,’ states Vinesh. ‘Width and speed are prerequisites for achieving the best production rates and the Durst and Aristomat machines fit our production blueprint perfectly,’ he attests.

To create the perfect packaging configurations on his new press, Vinesh has opted for top-notch design software from EngView Systems, providing effortless drafting and 3D modelling. ‘The award-winning parametric technology – EngView Synergy – provides an integrated CAD/CAM environment for the design of folding carton and corrugated packaging and related converting tools that are structured as a set of functional modules, covering the whole process – from conceptual design to die-making,’ advises Nigel. ‘Custom libraries of resizable designs and components are also easily created with the software, and recalled as and when required, in seconds.’

To ensure that Atlas Printers hit the ground running with their new equipment, Kemtek and its principals carried out a comprehensive operator training programme on-site. Although the installation was completed in September, Atlas Printers will continue to receive support and training from the Kemtek team, as well as regular technology upgrades.

‘We’ve been dealing with Kemtek for approximately 20 years, and we know we can trust the entire team to provide expert technical support and advice,’ remarks Vinesh. ‘It’s the overall investment in our business that we’ve always received from Nigel and his colleagues that gave us the confidence to secure our latest equipment purchases. Furthermore, the information and assistance that Durst, Aristomat and EngView have provided has been exemplary,’ he concludes.
